Another superb week of warm weather and it showed with all the butterflies that seemed to suddenly appear with the vast majority of them being Whites (Large and Small), along with Meadow Brown’s, Ringlets, Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshell which were also in good supply, with Comma, Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper and Small Skipper in smaller numbers, the first time this season we have actually got into double figures for a week. On the moth front a single Silver Y Moth was found, this is a migratory moth and only seen during the summer months easily seen as it’s a day time flyer.
Dragonflies and Damselflies however were a didn’t story with none showing this week, hoverflies again in short supply with the usual Eristalis pertinax, Eristalis pendulas, Episyrphus batteatus and the Long Hoverfly [Sphaerophhus scripta] being the common ones, however a new hoverfly was found in the forum of the Thick legged hoverfly [Syritta pipiens], taking the hoverfly list too a nice round figure of 15.
Common Green Grasshoppers can be found at the moment along with a few Plant Bugs, Cinnabar Moth Caterpillars can be seen on the ragwort
