Week 12

What happened to spring? its felt more like January this week, with the cold wind, and the rains have returned hence I’ve only been able to get out one dinner break this week but it was a lovely sunny day, felt more like a winter mind but the birds were good.

The Chiffchaff has arrived back on que, heard calling on the 19th, a couple of days earlier than average, but the right week this year. Chiffchaffs’ winter in western/southern Europe, southern Asia and North Africa, but also increasingly in Britain and are one of the first summer migrants to arrive back on out shores. These birds are identified by their dull green colour above and pale yellow below, with an off-white belly and a short eyebrow stripe, and often sing their name ‘chiff chaff chiff chaff chiff chaff’ can be easily confused with the similar Willow Warbler by sight.

The birds then 5 Common Buzzards this week soaring on the thermals over the nearby woods, down in the woods we’ve had Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Nuthatch [Heard], Robin, Blue Tit and Wren, still remaining on the pond the pair of Mallard and 1 Comma Butterfly braving the weather
